City & Guilds 2391-51: Periodic Inspection

This level will suit you if you work as an operative within the Electrotechnical industry. There are three options learners can take depending on their individual industry requirements, level of experience or prior knowledge. Candidates can choose to learn the skills involved in Inspection and Testing in stages or as a combined assessment. The options are

• 2391-51: Periodic Inspection. Intended for learners who have previously gained qualifications in Initial Verification, perhaps through a recognised apprenticeship and wish to expand their skills to include reporting on the condition of existing electrical installations.

This is a new Periodic Inspection qualification which is primarily aimed at electricians, who carry out periodic inspection  on existing installations. You should be able to work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard.


To start this course you need to have a copy of the latest Guidance Note 3 and a level 3 Certificate, Diploma or NVQ in Electrical installations, such as the 2397, 2330, 2365, 2356, 2357 qualifications.

Who is the qualification for?


It is aimed at practising electricians who have not carried

out inspection and testing since qualifying or who require

some update of training before going onto other City &

Guilds qualifications. The qualification is also suitable for

those with limited experience of initial inspection of

electrical installations, such as those entering the

industry from other engineering disciplines or who have

been working in allied trades


What does the qualification cover?

This qualification prepares candidates for the periodic

inspection of electrical installation work.


What opportunities for progression are there?

It allows candidates to progress into employment or to

the following City & Guilds qualifications:

• Level 4 Award in the Design and Verification of Electrical

Installations (2396)

• ILM management and leadership qualifications


The qualification is endorsed by the Institution of

Engineering and Technology


What does the Periodic inspection course consist of?


The course lasts 5 days and is taught in both a classroom and practical environment.

Why do you need the Level 3 Periodic inspection and testing qualification?

This qualification will teach you the principles, practices and legislation for the periodic inspection of electrical installations of existing electrical installations with statutory and non-statutory regulations and requirements. It will also help you to progress onto the Level 4 Award in the Design and Verification of Electrical Installations.
