The government has announced a national roll-out of around 50 million smart meters, to be fitted in over 26 million households across Wales, Scotland and England by the end of 2020. As the biggest national infrastructure project in our lifetime, it has also created a huge employment demand and to meet this installation challenge there is a requirement to train over 15,000 new certified meter engineers.

With this demand for new certified engineers comes new job opportunities all over the UK.

These course's can be taken by new entrants to the industry, or those wishing to extend their scope of work to allow them to install electric/gas smart meters.


What is a Smart Meter Installer


Smart Meter Installers fit new gas and electricity meters into customers' homes and businesses. They also maintain and repair them. During installation, installers also show customers how to use their new meter.

If you have got good practical skills, can get on easily with people and want a career that gets you out and about, this may be the right job for you.


Entry Requirements


You do not need any specific qualifications to start training as a Smart Meter Installer though some employers may prefer you to have a minimum of four GCSEs or equivalent qualifications.

You WILL be required to complete a Basic Disclosure prior to starting any employment

As a Smart Meter Installer, you will need:

Ability in maths
Good practical skills
Good organisational skills
Excellent customer care
The ability to work on your own
Excellent communication skills to explain how meters work
Self-motivation and a commitment to your career development
An awareness of safe working practices

For newcomers to the industry who are working or have just begun working in the installation and maintenance of smart meters and have some relevant knowledge or skills.
It is also suitable for existing installers who intend to upskill and carry out work in a new industry sector.
 Achievement of the Diploma gives training equivalent to CMA1 and MET1 but does not provide a route into other areas within the ACS gas scheme.
